Enough time for Soweto Tour?

I've searched and haven't found enough information to answer this question.

We are arriving Joburg at 2pm from Sabi Sand and overnighting at the Holiday Inn. Departing the next morning on an 11:40 am flight to Lusaka.

Is there enough time and does anyone offer a tour of Soweto in the late afternoon? I'm not even sure how far it is from Joburg.

Thanks,
Cindy

Hello,

Soweto tours usually run either in the morning (starting around 9) or the afternoon (starting around 1) However, if you book in advance, you should be able to arrange a tour -- it may cost a bit more if it is a private tour, but should be doable.

Cheers,
Julian

We arranged a private guide for the day we were leaving. There were 6 of us and we had our guide take us right to the airport afterward. He picked us up at our hotel at 9:30am and dropped us at the airport at 4:00pm. As I recall it was a very economical way to get both things (tour and transport) done.

Our guide lived in Soweto and the tour was wonderful. I'm not sure it could be done any quicker (6 hours or so). We weren't quite ready to leave at that. Soweto is quite a large area. You would have to shorten some time at the museum and at the church - or save the museum till the end when it's getting dusk.

I booked a "Soweto at night" tour since my time in Johannesburg is limited. It was recommended and one way to see Soweto.

I am planning to spend 2 nights in Joburg and am interested in seeing Soweto and the Apartheid Museum. I've been trying to get information from Face2Face tours and they haven't responded. Any other suggestions re tour groups or guides?

We used Wilro Tours. Our guide was a resident of Soweto.

Just last week I took a tour of Soweto, Joburg and the Origins Centre - all arranged with Lords Tours.

Lords Travel & Tours can organize private tours that suit your schedule if one of their regular itineraries doesn't work for you.

Their transfer drivers and guides were excellent and we saw everything we wanted and then some. Even got to visit with some of the people in their shacks and see how they live.

Their website is www.lordstravel.co.za

Cheers!

Viv...I wrote to them and got an immediate response. Then I asked about how they worked booking and payment. This was a few days ago. Haven't heard back yet. Did you book them from there?

I booked them the night before my tour. I had previously arranged a tour with another company that was cancelled at the last minute and my guest house suggested Lords. Try re-sending your email again to make sure they received it - I've been having problems with incoming and outgoing emails to/from South Africa in the last couple of weeks. If you need an immediate response give them a call.
Cheers!
