I am going to either Masai Mara or Serengeti in May 2015. I would like to know where I should go to see the animals, and how much of the safari will I be able to enjoy, due to the rains. I want to know when the rains will end, and I also want to know where should I go where off-road driving will be allowed. I am interested in seeing the wildebeest migration and also other animals, especially the lions, cheetahs, hyenas etc. I would really like to see the wildebeest when they are crossing the river, but I know that happens later on. What do you people think about me going on a wildlife safari to either masai mara or serengeti in may 2015. Will I be able to enjoy the safari, due to the rains and the bad weather ? Also, where should I go for the wildlife safari. Should I go to the serengeti or should I go to the Masai Mara. Also within either the Masai Mara or Serengeti, where should I go. Thank You.

Serengeti is the place for migration in may
there are specific areas where you are aloud to drive off road
don't bother yourself with the rain; you will enjoy it!!
rains are quite irregular (esp lately - global climate change) and you may encounter lots of rain even in mid dry season (at this latitude).

I have not seen a river crossing in my last 50 or so safaris
(I don't want to say what year was the last time I've seen a crossing - its not in this century. but I've seen a crossing of a lake

I'd go for the Central Serengeti as the herds are often here though some head to the west and go back-n-forth; some might even head somewhat north. There are well over 1/million wildies, so rare to miss them somewhere. Being in Central you can get to all of these areas. But don't bet on the weather and certainly not a river crossing, even the Grumeti River in the West as often there is insufficient water.

But are you only considering one country or if two, how many total days in-country and where else in either country? There's lots to see in both.

May is usually a bit rainy...last year the rains were not that heavy in Kenya.
Maasai Mara is very wide and needs a stay of 3 or more days to enjoy the different wild species.which to me,that's the fun of a safari. The migration is usually around July/august so probably best to do the safari in tanzania

We were in Kenya and Tanzania for 3 weeks in December-January. Our best game viewing was in the Mara, where we saw just about everything you can name (except rhino). We stayed at Offbeat -- wonderful small camp in Mara North, great location, and really incredible guides. We did not see anywhere near the variety of wildlife in the Serengeti, but if you want to see millions of wildebeest, the Serengeti is where to go.

Don't make a big deal out of some rain if it even does. It's not like you'll be walking about in it (you'll be in a vehicle) and for sure the animals don't go on holiday. May is just fine for the Serengeti - Central as I mention above.
