Dubai - Palm Island
Hi,
My son and his wife and are newlyweds, and just booked a flight to Dubai towards the end of March 2015. They want to stay in Palm Islands. They have never been there. Any recommendations where to stay? A hotel or a condo through VRBO OR airbnb?
Also, is it safe to travel there?
Thanks,
Carol

Safe enough to travel to Dubai.
But when it comes to Palm Island, recent article I read during visit to Kenya mentioned that it's sinking (expected). There are plenty of other luxe hotels from which to select than chance my hotel/condo sinking beneath me.

Suggest you check www.tripadvisor.com/forums - select Africa, select Dubai (or maybe it's listed under UAE or Emirates) and see what comments offered and reviews of various hotels at DBX.

Palm island is the largest artificial man-made island. There are so many beautiful resorts. This island is neat and clean, quiet and so tight security that's why it is very much safe for the travelers and the front beaches are very clean. So many people are working here very delicately. I am sure about that they will enjoy this trip.

If they want to stay on The Palm, they should book the Atlantis Hotel. They have special Romantic Getaway packages.
Note however that it takes at least a 40 min. taxi ride to get from Atlantis to downtown Dubai (Deira, Bur Dubai) and 25 min. to Dubai Marina (The Walk). With the unmanned train it takes even longer.
Sandi, fyi Dubai is NOT in Africa! On TA you can find it under Middle East --> United Arab Emirates.

I used to live in Dubai: I probably wouldn't stay on the Palm itself, since to Myriam's point you can be kind of marooned out there.
For a honeymoon, I'd recommend going for a hotel: Dubai definitely has very high standards in terms of luxury and service, so it probably is worth splurging a bit more.
March is a cooler month, so if they wanted beach, I'd go for something near the Marina (One&Only Royal Mirage, Le Royal Meridien, Ritz-Carlton) or Jumeirah Beach Hotel or Madinat Jumeirah. Otherwise, there are awesome hotels closer to dining/shopping like Raffles, Park Hyatt, The Palace or The Address, Oberoi, etc with great pools. The beaches in Dubai are ok, nothing special.
Atlantis is definitely worth a day visit.
