Going to have 2 long layovers in Dubai in March, one from 12:20pm til 8/9am the next day, and then on the way back from 7am til 2:45am the next morning.

Any tips on what to do? I'm thinking a city tour and a nice dinner going over, and on the way back I'd love to do a trip out to the desert! (Riding a camel would be a huge thing- I ride horses, so I'd love to try this!)

Any specific reviews on companies to avoid? Hotels to avoid or ones you recommend?

I'll be traveling alone, so would it be ok to go it alone as a female?

I would certainly recommend some places and companies. If you are planning a car rental, make sure it is a genuine company. Maybe you can go in for Hertz. They have good services in Dubai.You can check this out.

I wouldn't rent a car since you can get to everything easily by taxi. Be sure to visit the Dubai Museum and the nearby Sheik Saeed Heritage House. If you want a nice area to walk around, the Al Mamzer Beach Park is beautiful.

being alone here in dubai is absolutely safe. dont bother bout it.

for the city tour you could use the big bus hop-on hop-off. they have 2 routes which covers dubai well linking up the old and new parts, including the palm jumeira and also the malls etc.

for shopping if required it would be dubai mall (aquarium + burh khalifa) or mall of the emirates (indoor ski slope).

u could also do one of the evening dhow cruises. they come with a meal aboard and last for about 2 hours. it'll give you a view of the city from the water.

if you would like to visit the burj khalifa (tallest tower) then would suggest you book a slot in advance.

as trebex said dont bother bout a rental. taxis are ideal for the 2 days if required.

to hit the beautiful desert here you can use any of the better safari companies. there are quite a few good ones like lama and sunflower. arabian adventures being the best and slightly more expensive. all these companies also offer city tours. desert safaris are generally from 3/4pm till about 9/10pm depending on season. u can get a camel to ride at the safari camp amongst dune buggy bashing etc.

for horse riding you could try try the dubai polo and equ club or the al ahli club.

hotels and areas etc would depend on budget and star requirements.

Do NOT rent a car. You will waste time getting lost and trying to find parking. Dubai taxis are plentiful and affordable, When you leave the airport, ask for a 'normal taxi', otherwise you may be shuttled towards the more expensive limo service (except if that is what you prefer).
Zarir has given you excellent advice. Do the searches and see what you can fit in.
In March the weather is still lovely, you can plan on a beautiful night in the desert.
