Des Mille Collines Hotel

I am traveling to Rwanda in July and are using Africian Travel and Volcanoes Safaris.
I am staying 3 nights at the Des Milles Collins hotel and have transfers from the airport to the hotel-I am being charged $875.00 for 3 nights and transfers. This sounds a bit high to me. I am traveling by myself so I know I have to pay a single supplement but in some books I have read it appears Des Milles is a little less expensive, altho I know they renovated in 2006-maybe I have to pay for that. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks,
Claudia

You did not state whether the charge includes all meals at the hotel and the use of a vehicle (and driver) during the days.

it definately does not include any driver and I don;t think meals-but I'll check on that, just hotel and transfers.

I agree that seems high--especially for the Mille Collines, which [with one exception (Lucia78)] has been badly reviewed on this board and on TripAdvisor. I am trying to discern what your plan is. It sounds as though you are arriving in Kigali before the rest of your group--? I suspect that you could tell Volcanoes that you will make your own arrangements in Kigali, but then you would have to do so. The airport is not that far from the hotels. As an aside, I stayed at the Inter-Continental, now Serena. At my daughter's request we had lunch at the Mille Collines. I will say that we had just come from the genocide memorial and had seen Hotel Rwanda not more than 2 weeks earlier, but I did not care for what I saw of the Mille Collines--was glad that we did not stay there.

Claudia,
I am one of those to whom Rosenose refers. I stayed at the Milles Collines and reviewed it badly for a number of reasons . I would NOT stay there again - there are a number of other better choices including the Serena (which is slightly more expensive), or Chez Lando etc (which are cheaper). Here is a link to my trip report which details our experience http://www.fodors.com/forums_reg/threadselect.jsp?fid=4

Also, the price you have been quoted is VERY high if it doesn't include meals / driver. I THINK we paid about $125 per room per night and the airport is only about a 10 - 15 minute drive!
