Car rental agency in Windhoek, Namibia
Hello: What smaller car rental agencies in Windhoek, Namibia accept American Express? I'm looking to use AmEx automobile excess liability policy for my rental. Thanks

Agree that it is important to save money by using a credit card that offers the insurance savings, but also be sure to choose the car rental agency on the basis of their coverage across Namibia. Some of the less expensive agencies don't have much in the way of customer support - we had two flat tires on our trip (not uncommon) and learned the importance of a car rental agency that has good support on the road.

Regardless of which car rental agency you use, I recommend that you take the additional tire insurance. After years of driving with no problems on the gravel roads of Namibia, in October I experienced 3 flat tires in 4 days. The extra charges Avis added to my bill were more almost twice the cost of my 14-day rental.

The charges for our Avis Namibian rental became very complicated. The first bill was for $2,726 USD for a 14-day rental of an automatic VW Polo plus the tire damages. There was no breakdown of the various charges, and after many emails, I finally got an itemized list which included charges for things that had never occurred.
I disputed parts of the bill with MasterCard, but they declined to do anything about it. Avis, however, did make an adjustment of $529 USD to the bill. In the end, in addition to the 14-day rental fee, they charged $1,260 for the tire, the rim, the callout, kilometers traveled to deliver the tire, and VAT tax. Sorry, I can't give you a better breakdown, but as I said, it became very complicated.
All in all, it was a very unpleasant and costly experience.

We've bought extra excess insurance in the past, which will cover you for windscreen and tyres as well as damage and theft charges - we think it's well worth it. We're UK based but it looks like it can be purchased outside the UK. An annual worldwide policy is about $100.

"With car hire excess insurance, we insure the Policy Holder, not the rental vehicle. Car hire excess is a voluntary insurance. Decline the car rental company’s Excess cover at the counter when you collect the car. If the car is damaged or stolen, the car rental company will charge your credit card for the Excess amount and you then claim for reimbursement on your car hire excess insurance policy."
