(note....sorry for the copy/paste. I have the same post in the "Italy" forum....as I have an opportunity to spend a few months there before the project I'm working on would bring me to Cape Town.)



Hello. I'm so happy to find this board. Reading through the posts has been very informative....and really fun, too!

I have an opportunity to spend the winter months (May through October) in Cape Town.

What's life like in Cape Town that time of year?

What would be a great place (which suburb?)for a 4 month rental of a one bedroom luxury condo....on the water....with modern amenities...and a high level of safety and security? Aside from the myriad websites that offer "vacation rentals"....where might I go to look for a long term rental on a one bedroom condo on the coast?

Aside from "winter issues"...what's life on the coast like for "long term" tourists?

Any tips on things to do? How about specific places to shop....eat...or just hang out? And how about a "full service"...fully equipped gym for high quality workouts and lap swimming?

Bottom line....do you LOVE Cape Town? Why yes? Why no?

Cape town is a beautiful place and you should not have problems finding things to do . The whole Cape area is very different from the rest of South Africa ..December tends to be very busy as most South Africans take their holidays and the schools are on holidays too. So you might find it really busy.

Capetown is a beautiful city. There is more to do there than you can imagine. There seems to be plenty of places to rent apartments by the month so not to worry about that. There are a few sites that will show you maps of the Capetown area. Pick a suburb and look into what's available. If you are going for work puposes you will be somewhat limited by proximity to your work. Ask Selwyn for help if you want more info regarding things to do, accomodations, location and food.
We were there in May and it was lovely. We will definitely be going back. There was too much to do and see in the 4 days we had.
If I were you I would try to book a day or two with Selwyn upon your arrival and ask him to give you the lay of the land.

I'm now looking for a one month rental in Cape Town from October 20, 2004 to November 20, 2004.

I need a washer/dryer in the unit....and more than anything, I need high speed internet access in the unit.

I'm assuming, given those two requirements, that I will be looking at apartments instead of hotels, no?

Or...as an alternative...is there a reason to stay one week in one "suburb" and then bounce around a bit...four times / four suburbs?

Anyone with any specific recommendations regarding properties to look at?

As for "general tips"...what do you think of the "V&A Waterfront area"....compared to Camps or Hout Bays?

Will I need a rental car for the entire month....or is there an area where an apartment would be located close enough to shopping, entertainment, culture, beaches, gym and other services....so that walking and the ocassional taxi ride would be adequate?

I'd so tremendously appreciate any help that you all can provide.

What Alison said... we were there at the same time as her (and enjoyed a great Fodorite GTG in the area with Selwyn and another Fododorite, Uhoh).

In our 17 days in CT, winelands and garden route we had only a few rainy days and some overcast days but a lot of wonderful sunny days.

We also enjoyed smaller crowds and lower prices for accommodation.
