British Airways new baggage policy effective July 5, 2006

I don't think this has been posted here yet http://www.britishairways.com/travel...y/public/en_us

Of particular interest to Africa travelers may be the fact that there's no longer a weight limit for your carry on (formerly 6 kg in economy) only that passengers must be able to lift it into the overhead unassisted. A size limit still applies.

"*World Traveller passengers travelling to or from the US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico will continue to be allowed two checked bags in line with the local government regulations."

I interpret that to mean for travelers with through itineraries to/from the above regions, the 2 piece allowance still applies with a max weight of 23 kg per bag = 46 kg max per person. I believe this is in line with all US carriers and many European carriers now (which carriers still allow 2 bags at 32 kg each in economy?).

The weight allowance for international origin/destination other than the above regions has always been 23 kg (though it's now limited to a single piece) which is more generous than the 20 kg economy limit of many other European carriers.

It does represent a 9 kg decrease in allowance for UK domestic flights, but you can make up the difference by bringing a 15 kg carry on now

The carryon size limit is the same as on most US carriers - 22" rollaboard. The 23kg limit is already in use by several US airlines.

The good news is that the more liberal cabin bag rule comes into effect on 5 July. The not-so-terrible news is that the new checked bag limits take effect on 11 October, so you get the best of both worlds until October.

Gardyloo,
Are there US carriers that still allow more than 50 lbs per bag for economy, non-elite pax?

Sorry Patty, think I might be getting mixed up in my old age but why did I think that it was always 32kgs from Europe on any longhaul flights?

Here's the current baggage policy for comparison.

Checked -http://www.britishairways.com/travel/bagchk/public/en_us

Carry on -
http://www.britishairways.com/travel...n/public/en_us

To summarize for economy class passengers, to/from US, Canada, Caribbean, Nigeria, Brazil and Mexico - decrease in checked weight allowance (many other carriers have already made this move), increase in carry on weight allowance

All other intl routes - no change in checked weight allowance, increase in carry on weight allowance

Domestic UK routes - decrease in checked weight allowance, increase in carry on weight allowance

I think I got that right.

Anyone going through Heathrow had better watch the size of the cabin luggage as cabin lugggage for all airlines will have to meet the IATA size of 56cm (22in) long, 45cm (18in) wide and 25cm (10in) deep

Folks, i've been on several BA flights.....on fully packed flights (every flight London-India sectors) the crew takes away all carry-on bags with wheels, even if it is within the weight limits. This is for both club and world traveller sections. Passengers are made to take out all essentials like medication etc etc., at the gate and the crew puts it in along with the checked in luggage.
