Big Cat Diary
For those interested, the latest edition of Big Cat Diary is scheduled to be shown beginning this Saturday night on Animal Planet...8pm-9pm est (USA). The prior 2 seasons are available on DVD but only an international version which requires a DVD player that is region free (for US viewers). I think this latest series is from 2006 while the DVD has the 2004 & 2005 series. Set your Tivo!

Thanks Eric, I will be watching/recording. I wonder if it will feature the cheetah named Honey? We saw her and her three cubs last Sep 2006 in Mara. Also there was the BBC film crew and Jonathan Scott.
I have the other DVD, got it from Amazon in UK. It plays on my USA player because like most players you can yourself make your player region free. This from my posting on 7/31/06

Do a search for your DVD player.
Most region hacks are ridiculously simple. On my Philips DVD727 you open the tray, on the remote press slowly 9 9 9 9 0. Done, no more region restrictions. To put the region code back to region 1, 9 9 9 9 1. Or 2, 3, 4.

By the way, if you google Big Cat Diary you will get to the BBC site which has some video and a blog from the last filming season. We too were in the Mara, in late July/early Aug. and had the fortune to have Kike (with mange unfortunately) take refuge on our hood/bonnet for about 5 minutes. Very, very cool experience.

I believe there are actually two 30-minute shows Saturday. The first features the Marsh Pride and Bibi and her cubs, the second features the Ridge Pride, Keke the cheetah and her cubs, and Bella the leopard and her two cubs.

They are replayed a few times but these are actually the 2005 BCD shows(but 1st time shown in the US) not the 2006 version. If you go to animal planet's web site you can have reminders sent to your computer so you don't miss them.

Well, I watched it last night on Animal Planet channel. And I had already seen it on DVD. This series of episodes was originally shown on the BBC in 2005. I got last year it on DVD from amazon in the UK - here -http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000EMI5FG/203-2395422-5896752
Cost of DVD and shipping was around $24 USD. Buy it just like you buy anything on amazon, easy and quick. Yes, the DVD is region 2 and for PAL (not USA) but any decent DVD player will play it anyway. Also, a much better picture than you will get off of Animal Planet.
On Animal Planet last Saturday night they had parts of episodes 1 and 2 of week 2 of Big Cat Week. They rename it Big Cat Diary as probably required by the BBC because Animal Planet chops out so much. The episodes on DVD run 30 minutes, on Animal Planet they also run 30 minutes but 10 minutes or so of that is commercials. So guess what gets chopped, scenes from the original. It would be better if Animal Planet went ahead and added commercials but did not clip scenes and adjusted the shows timing. Also of course with Animal Planet you get the addition of their ugly logo in the lower right of the picture and those awful flying banner commercials for new programming at the bottom. (When I become king that cr@p will be outlawed).
