Are day rooms available in Nairobi?
will be spending a day in nairobi before 10pm flight home. Planning on visit to Sheldrake's elephant orphanage, the Giraffe Center, 2 in party going to Carnivore Restaurant. Any convenient hotels offering day rooms for nap/shower, and possible rates for same? Thanks so much for any responses.

My tour operator has given me names of a few hotels with prices starting at $75 per person. I thought perhaps I might get suggestions that would be less expensive as there are 4 of us. I guess a day room would cost as much as staying overnight. We will be there in Oct., don't know if that is peak season for them. Thank you.

Thanks Pippa and Sandi. The Fairfax wasn't mentioned; the Panafric, Intercontinental, Nairobi Safari Club, New Stanley and Norfork were. As I said, starting at $70 up to $120 per person. I'll check out the Fairfax.

You might also consider the Anglican Guest House. They have a day rate of KES 1900, which is about $31 at today's exchange rates.

Most of the hotels in Nairobi offer day rooms but from 0800 hours to 1800 hours though they can extend with few hours if the hotel is not busy. Others charge overnight rates for staying after 1900 hours but of course you can discuss that with your travel agent, probably they will be able to secure a room for you for that duration no extra charge.

The Fairview also has another, less expensive hotel on their property, the Country Lodge. You might see what they would quote you for a day room.

I contacted the Fairview and the dayroom rate is same as overnight unless we leave by 6pm,then it is 1/2 price. They didn't say when check in is, only check out time of 10am. The economy room rate is 11,000 Kes which is about $186 and they want me to take 2 rooms. I don't know how long it would take to the airport from hotel or how soon before flight you have to check in. Since we want to go to Sheldrake's and the giraffe center, maybe we don't really need a day room, maybe just someplace we can check our bags. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

KRNS, only expensive hotels are mentioned in this thread. ShayTay has a somewhat more reasonably priced alternative, but in the city centre there’re a couple of good hotels that are less expensive than the Anglican Guest House. They don’t have websites though. As you’re going to do activities in the Karen area you could check with Karen Camp. http://www.karencamp.com/index.html

KRNS, if you're not looking to take a nap or shower, then why not just keep your bags with you? Are you going to have a driver for the day? Most of the time, the drivers wait for you as you do your tour, then drive you to the next place. The driver would watch over your bags while you're busy. By the way, it's "Sheldrick's". Say "Hi" to Chyulu for me if she's still there!
There are other places in town that you could visit, especially if you want to do some shopping. I encourage people to go to Amani ya Juu, which is a shop with sewn goods run by a women's self help organization. The Kazuri Bead Factory is near the Giraffe Centre, as well.

If you want just a place to land, nothing fancy and then free up your money for elsewhere, you could try Nairobi Backpackers. They have an apartment with a small kitchen and several beds for $26 in 2006. You won't have to pay for each person.
There were two of us there, and we kept thinking about all the room wasted on us. They also have cheaper rooms, but the bathroom facilities are then shared. The only bad thing is it was on the third floor w no elevator. If you go see the elephants, consider adopting one , and then you could come back around 5-6 PM to help feed your own elephant. I still regret we didn't plan for that.
