Abu Dhabi overnight stay

On our way to Maldives, we are overnighting in Abu Dhabi, arriving at 8:20pm and leaving the next morning at 8:45. Given the short time, we am tempted to just book a hotel close to the airport and get as much rest as we can. However, we’ve never been to Abu Dhabi and thought that perhaps booking a hotel in the city it would at least give us an opportunity to see a little bit more from the cab on our way to the hotel and back, if only for 30-40 min. Does that make sense? Any thoughts on either plan? Also, Is it safe to just grab a cab outside the airport and do we need to exchange money for the fare? Any idea of how much a fare would be?

On our way back we even have less time, 11:20pm to 8:45 am, so we thought of booking an airport lounge instead of the hotel. Does that seem like a good idea?

Any feedback would be much appreciated! Many thanks!
