Zanzibar or longer Safari?
We are trying to finalize our safari plans for April 2008. Should we take a 12 Safari around Tanzania or a 10 day Safari with 3nights Zanzibar? My husband would really like to see Zanzibar but the 12 day safari has such great lodges on the intinerary!!

Hi Lisa,
It's really a matter of personal taste -- I'd choose being on safari over being on a beach any day, but other people feel differently.
If you have a custom itinerary, there's no reason why you can't get the lodges you want and still go to Zanzibar to keep your husband happy.
Cheers,
Julian

I didn't fall madly in love with Zanzibar, but having done two safaris, one with the beach extension and one without, I felt much more relaxed when I came home after a few days on the beach.
I'm not a beach person, but less dust and more seafood can't be all bad, can it?
However, what's the itinerary?

Why not post your itinerary, so we can advise on the safari portion - where, number of days - and comment on how a beach extension might fit.
Generally, but not always, those who have the time, like to take a few days from bumping along the Tanzanian roads with relaxing on a beach before returning home.

Morning Lisa,
I had the same dilemma when planning my safari with my family and boyfriend. You see pictures of the beautiful beaches and you think now that's the way to end a safari. As Sandi stated it would be a nice way to finish up after hours on bumpy roads. Since your husband would really like to go then I would suggest it. To maximize your time on safari I would try to do a fly'n'drive safari which as I found is not too costly and then finish off in Zanzibar. I, personally, gave up the beach to spend time in both Kenya and Tanzania but my brother gave up Tanzania to spend time in Mombassa. It's all personal preference.

Lisa, I think you'll be happy with the itinerary you've chosen; I can't see any reason to go out to Mbalageti in April.
If you do a search, you'll find reports on Mbuzi Mawe. Not everyone loves it, but it's certainly in the middle of some big cat action, apparently.

Sorry, I should clarify: I am no expert, and probably Eben or Bill or Sandi or someone can offer more suggestions, but the Mbalageti itinerary seemed off to me because the western corridor is better June/July.
