Zanzibar Lodging...

Does anyone know what it's like? ive heard there's either high end or not great. Any recommendations?

we stayed at Mnarani Beach Cottages (www.lighthousezanzibar.com) and loved it! it on thee north end, reasonably priced ($100 per room) and for that we had a huge 2-story cottage that slept 3 with our own kitchen that was directly on the beach. it's not high-end (no pool, no spa, etc), but good cottages, great food (local - lots of fresh fish) and very laid back. also, Matemwe Beach Cottages looks good - mosre upscale (but were unavailable when we went) with a pool, but definitely not over the top.

Thank you.. looked at the site and it looks lovely. Do you know how long is the drive from the airport to Mnarani and is renting a car a good idea?

drive is about an hour. renting car - depends what you want to do. we didn't. we just hung out on the beach, went diving with Ras Nungwi (10-15min walk, also good if you want more company). roads were ok, so i don't think it will be a nightmare to drive. however, make sure you have a good map - not too many signs on the roads.

btw: there's a pool at Mnarani now... looks divine :)

wow! that was quick! we were there in Dec 20005 and spoke with the owner. he didn't even mention doing a pool. business must have been good!

yes, the pool looks lovely. we stayed in "family cottages".. the pricces are a bit higher, but makes sense with a pool added.
