ZANZIBAR 3 DAYS

We are thinking of spending three days on Zanzibar. Is there enough to do there for that amount of time? We will have spent 3 days already at Mnemba Island so we probably won't want to go to the beach on Zanzibar.

I guess I should say that the alternative to three days on Zanzibar would be two days on Zanzibar and a day at the beginning of our trip touring Nairobi. Any opinions?

I'd go with the second option - 2-days Zanzibar and 1-day NBO.

In Zanzibar, Stone Town can take up a good day with such interesting winding streets and the architecture. There's also tours to spice plantations. And you might consider a day-trip to Chumbe Island which is a total eco-friendly environment. For day-tours, only a maximum (14) number of people are allowed, and no pre-bookng is accepted. But you can contact their offices 2-days prior re availability. The price is about $70/person. See their site at:

www.chumbeisland.com

While in NBO, you can fill a day or half-day with trip out to Karen Blixen's (Out of Africa) fame, the Giraffe Center, the Museum. And don't miss lunch or dinner at The Carnivore Restaurant.

Thanks for the great advice. We're planning on an extra day in Nairobi rather than on Zanzibar. I've looked into the Karen Blixen Museum and The Giraffe Center and they both look well worth it!

styleoracle - and don't forget lunch or dinner at The Carnivore when in NBO.
If you happen to be in NBO for a full day, you might consider the Daphne Elephant Orphanage (that's not the correct name [too early for the mind to be working properly], but your tour operator will know) - they have early morning schedule(about 10am) to visit with and enjoy the Ellees - it is an experience. Check this out, as the Karen Blixen and Giraffe Center don't take up that much time.

Thanks! I'll look into it!

That's Daphne Sheldrick's Elephant.....

Karen Blixen is however wonderful if you are a fan of the book and the local national museum isn't bad.
Do be careful, I was mugged in Nairobi as was another back packer I met up with.
You will love Zanzibar, check out the local market, and definatly get on a spice tour. If you have room to bring one home the spice boxes are great, I have one from 2 years ago I use as a jewlery box and it still smells of cloves.
