Considering the incidents (remember Jan Goss' trip reports) of elephants in Amboseli being speared by Masai, is it any wonder the scent and color would upset them.

Interesting, they should try the same tests with elephants that don't come in contact with Masai and see if they react the same just to rule out that they are reacting to smelly clothes or red.

I think one Of Johan's 'myths' might prove to be correct after all.

I dont find this particularly amazing. Elephants have shown more sophisticated behaviour than upset reactions to things they associate with threats.

Tanky, which one of Johans myths might prove to be correct???
I added a myth about colour that was: If, when in a big, humming, diesel guzzling vehicle, you dont wear colours that blend perfectly with the environment and are bought in specialist shops, the mostly colour blind animals will run away. Its still a myth. Though I now know a bit more about elephants and colour and would, even if smells are far more important, avoid wearing red when visiting Amboseli elephants as I would avoid wearing khaki around elephants that are hunted by people wearing khaki. Id wear a friendly Hawaiian shirt anywhere in Africa (if I had one).

Im very busy, but have to revisit that myth thread. It seems like I was accused of being silly.

Thanks Dennis. I think I was exaggerating a bit. Id wear a Hawaiian shirt in Africa if there were only animals around.
