yellow fever vaccine for those over 65?
I have read several times on this forum that those over 65 possibly might not be able to take the YF Vaccine. I have researched the WHO website and cannot find anything. Can someone please enlighten me about the vaccine and age? If you cannot take it because of age what kind of papers do you have to get into the country? (Kenya and Tanzania) I would not want to be stopped at the border!!
Thanks so much. |
See the CDC site www.cdc.gov Select Kenya or Tanzania and I found the info under YF inoc.
Discuss with your physician and if it's determined you NOT have the YF inoc, you just need a note on doc's letterhead to this effect. Make a copy of this note, keep with your passport and you shouldn't have any problem on entry between the two countries. |
sandi is bang on !
Being 65 and over is no reason not to have the yellow Fever vaccine.....however IF due to any other medications your are taking and/or the condition of your health at present, your Doctor feels you should not have the vaccine... then he will write you a waiver letter . This is done on an individual basis... because being 65 is not a deterrent to having the Yellow Fever Vaccine. |
... or if allergic to eggs (another reason for anyone not to have the YF jab).
Percy - "bang on!" WOW! :) |
I'm 60, and my county health department refuses to give anyone 60 or older the YF vacccine. The travel Dr. that they referred me to told me that it could cause death (WOW! Do I know how to have fun vacations or what!) You can't be on steroids, and the egg allergy thing is also a reason not to get it. I did get it, along with an adult polio booster and typhoid medication...painless, and I guess I can go anywhere, for at least 5 yrs.
That in itself is worth it! |
Hi sandi and sillysue
Yes the egg allergy BUT the egg allergy is for all ages and not just for 65 and over. I do not understand (sillysue) for what reason your health clinic refuses you the Yellow Fever Vaccine. But telling someone that it could " cause death" ..Wow, that is not very helpful. (The Flu Vaccine can and has caused deaths..perhaps to people that never should have had it in the first place.) There are reason why a person over 65 might not be a candidate for Yellow Fever Vaccine.....but only your doctor ( and the Travel doctor) knowing your medical history can make that decision. But Slybea .... asked about Age and Yellow Fever Vaccine so let me just say that if someone says: "Hey ,I am a healthy 65 year old ,can I still have the Yellow Fever Vaccine"... The answer is Absolutely. !! Yes sandi ...you were bang on !! and of course you are correct about the egg allergy. :) |
Asante Percy -
Hey, even aspirin can cause death! |
