Yellow Fever-transit between countries
 

Hello- My Mom and I will be going to Rwanda, then Kenya, Tanzania. I have been to CDC, travel clinic and am wondering about yellow fever border requirements for those who have a letter from their doctor indicating yellow fever vaccination could not be taken. Anyone have any experience of this? Thanks.

I have been to all three countries, and while I always carry my yellow health card indicating vaccinations (including yellow fever), I have never been requested to produce it.

Did you check with the Rwanda Embassy whether you require Yellow Fever inoculation for entry?

Also check whether if having been in Rwanda, you require Yellow Fever inoculation for entry into Kenya and/or Tanzania by contacting both the Kenya and Tanzania Embassies.

Right now, visitors from western countries do not require Yellow Fever inoculation arriving into Kenya or Tanzania or between the two, but I'm not certain whether you need proof if you've been to Rwanda.

With this information and if, for whatever reason, you cannot take the YF, inquire of all Embassy's whether a doctor's note to this effect will suffice. It probably will, but get the information directly. However, don't be surprises if the information is conflicting.

Punch in my name to get a little more info. - I had asked this question awhile ago in regards to my trip. I as well, was concerned about being made to get the innoculations due to health issues. My understanding (from WHO and my MD) is that you can be deemed exempt with a letter written in a perscribed format BUT any country can still refuse at their border, although it's unlikely. Also, some countries in Africa actually require a yellow fever cert. when coming from the US. I believe that Kenya and Tanzania are considered endemic as well. Check the WHO site for the best info.

While I have never been asked to produce any health or innoculation info while travelling between African countries, keep in mind that this will change completely if there is an outbreak of yellow fever while you are travelling. As long as there are no big outbreaks...no problems or questions. But if there is, you will be asked, and then possibly or probably refused entry. So the probability is low (very very low) but the outcome (if you don't have that little yellow book, properly stamped) could be rather disastrous.
