Wise to bring some Rand to Africa?

Spouse wants me to get about $150 in Rand now at AE. Will it come in handy? Johannesburg/Vic Falls/C'town

It's rarely necessary to pre-purchase local currency before arrival. Because the US banking system is behind the international times, you will probably end up paying a higher rate and a high commission. Just wait until you arrive and change money at the airport. Less hassle and more profitable.

Not sure where you are coming from. I have not found it easy to get Rands at most American banks. It is not like pounds or francs that were easily obtainable. It is not a bad idea if you can get rands as it is handy to have some rands just for tipping, or if you have to take a cab, but in a pinch, they will take dollar notes as well (obviously coins are useless).

If you can't find Rands before you get there, you can always get some money at the airport or at an ATM. but after such long flights, who feels like another detail to take care of. I like to have Rands on me, (which I have from previous trips), but you do not need $150 worth.
