Winelands Resturants

For the first part of our trip to South Africa, we will probably have two nights to eat dinner at Stellenbosch and/or Franshoek. The first night we will just be arriving late afternoon and staying at the Lanzerac, so dinner in Stellenbosch would be best, then Franshoek the next night. This will be the first part of June on Friday and Saturday nights, will we need reservations before we arrive at there? Any reccomendations for resturants would be appreciated.

Our favourite food was at Le Bon Vivante. We also enjoyed meals at La Petite Ferme, Delicious and Cottage Fromage. Topsi's was immense fun though food was not as good as others... but it was BYOB which gives a way of drinking wines from vineyards visited.

In June you will not have to make prior reservations for dinner even if it be a Friday or a Saturday however there is no harm in making reservations so my advice is do so.

I cannot make out whether you will be spending your 2nd night in Stellenbosch or Franschhoek. If you are spending the night in Stellenbosch then I would not recommend that you travel all the way to Franschhoek for dinner as there are enough restaurants in Stellenbosch that are as good cuisine as you will find in anywhere in Franschhoek.

In or around about Stellenbosch I would recommend that you visit:

Moyo - No matter what some reports on this board say Moyo IS a UNIQUE experience for any first time visitor.

L Auberge du Paysan - Wonderful classy dining experience.

Tokara - Excellent cuisine

96 Winery Road. Good restaurant heavily frequented by locals

If you insist on wanting to eat in Franschhoek then where I would have recommended Klein OlifantsHoek in the past I now would not do this because of their ludicrous new pricing however the new spot on the block is a restaurant called Reubens. Imho this establishment is worth the ride from Stellenbosch,1726,00.html

I am still to eat at the restaurant Bon Vivant that Kavey suggested and must add that I have only heard excellent reports about the venue, however I do believe that the young couple who run the restaurant close down annually for the June-August period.

Hope the above helps.

Very proudly part of the wonderful nation of South Africa

Kavey and Selwyn,
Thanks for your replies. We are staying in Stellenbosch, not Franschhoek, but the resturants in Franschhoek seem to get a lot of recommendations. We could also lunch at Franschhoek instead of dinner, this may be nice if the resturant has a nice view. I think we would definitely like to try Tokara in Stellenbosch, the menu looks very interesting. Thanks for your help.
