SA: Tips for Petrol & Parking Attendants

Do you always tip the person who fills your tank and the person who is watching the parking lot? If so, how much? For parking, what would be an approriate tip for an hour vs. overnight? Aside from restaurants and guides, who else should we tip? Thanks.

Hello,

When I'm in South Africa, I usually tip the petrol attendant R2-3 (R5 if they check the tires and wash the windscreen, etc). I've never parked overnight, but when I park for an hour or two on the street (e.g. to eat dinner) I usually tip R2. According to the South Africans I've spoken to, this is pretty much the norm.

Cheers,
Julian

Ditto to Julian...
A couple of rand for filling up the tank/ processing the payment (btw are you aware that stations don't accept credit card payments, or didn't when we were there last May/ June?).
A couple rand more if they wash the screen etc.
And anything from 1-5 rand for watching the car if we stop... depending on how long we stop for...

Thanks!!!

And I assume you tip a parking attendant before leaving your car?

No, you tip them when you come back -- the tip is for keeping an eye on the car while you're gone.

Cheers,
Julian
