Whirling Dervishes Cairo
 

while in Cairo, anybody go to one of the folkloric whirling dervishes shows . If so what was the cost? Which one? Was it worth seeing?

Not in Cairo, but in Istanbul. Quite possibly the most boring two hours of my life. Wish I had my $10 back.

I believe it is more famous in Turkey.. however in Cairo you may find them as part of the entertainment on dinner Nile Cruises (followed or preceded by a belly dancer of course :)

I think there's a free whirling dervishes performance on Wednesday and Saturdays at 8pm at the Ghuriya Cultural Center in Al-Ghuri’s Mausoleum.

There is a free show at the Citedal. I think it's everynight at 6pm (1 hour), but with Ramadhan I'm not sure if the time has changed. In Cairo I think they are called the Sufi dancers.

In Sharm, you can get a desert bedouin dinner not far from Sharm with a dervish who whirls for 20 or30 minutes. It was long enough to get the idea.

The traditional bedouin dinner was cooked over an open fire, with low (oriental)sofas & tales. The traditional entertainment included the men singing traditional bedouin songs at acamp fire, a belly dancer, etc.

It was a little touristy, but everyone there had a good time. Sharm attracts families, honeymooners, singles, etc. from the Islamic states and Europe and the dinner was attended by all.

The hills were lit with candles inside of bags which made the area twinkle.

Sorry to say I thought the show was boring as well. I saw it on one of the dinner cruises on the Nile in Cairo. Food was great.

I saw three whirling dervishes while in Cairo. One on a Nile dinner cruise that was imminently forgettable and two on two different nites at the Al Rubiayat restaurant in the Mena House hotel. The one on Saturday nite was absolutely fascinating, a different one on Monday nite was mediocre.

The show was free. An excellent gourmet dinner for two (without wine) was about 100 american dollars.
