Which adapters for Botswana and South Africa?
 

I thought I had this figured out but after seeing all these options I am confused.

Thanks Gail. Does the "grounded" adapter mean that the US plug has the 3 prongs instead of 2? I am thinking I won't need any "grounded" adapters. Last trip I just gave my stuff that needed charging to my friend that took care of it all so I didn't pay attention to what was used.

It's a bit of a jumble at the WS Bots camps actually... I have recently written to them suggesting that they standardize.

The newly rebuilt camps (Savuti, Little Vumbura) have multi outlet adapters (which include USA outlets) in the tents and main areas.

Chitabe uses the UK 2-prong in the tents (http://tinyurl.com/42tbac), but most of the camps use the standard RSA plug (http://tinyurl.com/48s9or).

Finally, and the reason for my letter to standardize, some of the camps' main areas (ie. Tubu and Chitabe, likely others) use the India 3-prong (similar to the larger pin RSA plug, but not the same): http://tinyurl.com/4puqc3.

For South Africa, cell phones use the UK 2-prong listed above, while the rest use the RSA standard.

If you want the most accessibility, bring one of each.

Sorry, just tested the tunyURL's and they are not all correct...

UK 2-prong is the EU 2-prong... just scroll a bit from my link and you'll see them all.

Do I need grounded or ungrounded?

The EU plugs are ungrounded... it doesn't matter unless you're using a hair dryer or shaver.

I am really confused about the adapters for SA. I've seen references to Type D and Type M (and even Type L) as being appropriate. Which is it?

I am assuming M is just a bigger version on D, correct?

The electricity supply in South Africa is 220-250 volts, 50 Hz.

The problem with the pictures is there are two versions with the 3 pin design. One has "normal" size pins (Type D) and one has much larger size pins (Type M). Both reference South Africa. Which one is the correct "standard"?

You are correct. The M version (15 Amp)is larger than the D version.(5 Amp) The formal standard (socket in wall) is the M version with the D version only being implemented once an adaptor is utilised.
