Where would you see Migration June 09?
We are planning a 9-11 day trip mid-June - first part of July. Would you recommend Tanzania, Kenya, or both to see the migration? Where would you expect the Migration to be? Do you know where the migration was in the latter part of June this year? Any thoughts on potential itinerary?

i would split it into northern serengeti and massai mara.
the migration will be certainly in northern serengeti and might have started crossing the mara river into the massai mara - all depending on the rains. happy planning! div |
This might be useful, but there are no guarantees

There are no guarantees, based on the rains and grazing lands...but in June to early July the game is mostly in the Western corridor. They soon start moving towards northern Serengeti.
This past season, the herds happened to have moved early and small groups started appearing in the Mara in early-July; the balance later in the month which is the usual. The year before, they were late, only arriving in the Mara at mid-August. These strange confused animals also have a habit of moving north then turn around back to the West. The herds do not all move at the same time, nor always in the same direction. And you have to remember the resident herds that never migrate. |
I like that link Sniktawk put in with the months popping around the Serengeti and Mara.
Here are some more links. Past history: http://www.atta.co.uk/nomad/2005_04_01_archive.html Migration: http://www.go-safari.com/Serengeti/serengeti.htm http://www.africadreamsafaris.com/lodges/serengeti.html http://safari.go2africa.com/africa-f...april-june.asp http://safari.go2africa.com/africa-f...y-november.asp http://www.ultimateafrica.com/Wildebeest_migration.html best-perfect safaris for different months: http://www.kiliwarriors.com/ If Migration is The Goal of the Whole Trip and you have 9-11 days on the ground, I'd do just Tanzania and I'd shoot for a mid-June departure as opposed to July: 1-2 day for Arrival, maybe Arusha National Park 3-4 for Western Serengeti 1-2 for Central Serengeti about 2 for Northern Serengeti 1-2 Crater If you want to maximize the animals you see, along with herds of wildebeest, zebra, and other hooved species, plus put yourself in a decent spot for the migration then I’d do: 1-2 day for Arrival, maybe Arusha National Park 1-2 Crater 3 Western Serengeti 1 day transit 3 days Mara Good luck and let us know what you decide. |
