Where to stay in Zanzibar?

Were are in the process of planning a trip to Africa for Feb 04 and are probably going to be going to Tanzania. We also want to incorporate an island in our trip for relaxation. We are thinking about Zanzibar. Has anyone stayed at any beach resorts here.. eg. Fundu Lagoon, Mnemba, etc. Any recommendations or suggestions?? We were also considering Seychelles. Any opinions?

Depending on the number of days you have for Zanzibar you can split the tour into Stone Town Zanzibar and Beach stay. The Emerson and Green hotel owned by Americans is a wonderful hotel in Stone Town combining traditional Zanzibari architecture with colourful decor. Dinner at the open-air rooftop restaurant is highly recommended. Stone Town is mysterious with its narrow alleyways lined with shops laden with spices, cloth and zanzibari artefacts. You could easily spend 2 nts in Stone Town and also include a visit to the spice plantations.

Mnemba offers a fabulous 'Robinson Crusoe' experience but is very, very expensive. The reef is 10 meters from the shores and so the snorkelling is just on your doorstep. The club also does trips to other reefs for snorkelling as well as diving. Game fishing is also excellent. The spacious beach chalets at Mnemba are built from traditional materials which blend perfectly into the island environment. This is a place that eschews gleaming woods, marble floors, baths, jacuzzis and many other modern amenities that most luxurious beach hotels (in Seychelles) seem to emphasize these days and instead chooses to retain a simple, laid-back style that seems to attract the jetset and the wealthy. It has the 'wow' factor that very few beach resorts can match.

However, Fundu Lagoon in my opinion is a better value option, even though getting there involves an extra flight to Pemba Island and a boat transfer to Fundu. Theirs is a fusion of modern (wooden floor boards and four-poster beds) and rustic(thatched roofs and ceiling fans). You can do all the things that are on offer at Mnemba, eat the same type of food as Mnemba and sunbathe on the most fabulous beach that is as good as Mnembas's, all at nearly half the price of Mnemba. So if you find Mnemba too pricey than choose Fundu Lagoon.

The other place I do like is Ras Nungwi on Zanzibar Island. It has excellent accommodation that is cheaper than Fundu or Mnemba's and also has one of the best diving schools in Zanzibar.

When in Selous last year, we met a couple who had visited numerous beach resorts in Tanzania. They stayed several nights on Mnemba Island, which they liked, but were not sure it was worth the price. They also went to Fundu Lagoon and enjoyed that immensely. One that King did not mention was Mafia Island, the Polepole Lodge. They really liked it there. As far as Zanzibar, I've heard good things about Sultan's Palace. Food for thought.

We were in Zanzibar over New Year's and we adored Breezes Beach Club. Read my trip report thread titled "Tanzania Notes"
