We stayed at Pilgrim's Rest, which isn't too far away. It was okay. Not great, but I don't know of anything else in the area. The whole town is a restored gold mining town, rather quaint. You have to be satisfied with quirky "bed & breakfast" style accomodations. Our rooms were in a cottage across the street from the main hotel and were victorian in style, but still very clean and kind of cute, with all the conveniences of a modern bath, etc. The hotel dining room was fine, with great service. The hotel bar was a hoot, with a very strange crowd of drunken locals who would just love for you to buy them a drink. The biggest drawback to the hotel was that we did not feel very safe. There were lots of seedy characters lurking about on the street and signs everywhere about looking out for drug dealers. Nevertheless, if you just go from your room to the dining room at night, you should be fine. I believe they have a website, so you can look them up. There is also a small gold mining museum in the town which is worth a look.

Our favorite in the area, but it might be too far to drive from the Blyde River Canyon, was Critchley Hackle at Dullstroom. Incredibly charming, luxurious, with fabulous service and a GREAT dining room. We loved it.

A couple of years ago we stayed at a lovely lodge right near the Blyde River Canyon reserve. It's called the Blyde River Canyon lodge - http://www.blyderivercanyonlodge.com/
It's a bit further from the touristy stop-off points of Pilgrim's Rest, etc. but is located in a beautiful area with great views. The lodge is set in a lovely garden and there are even a few zebra and wildebeest willing to pose by the pool at sunset for photos. We found the food and service to be excellent, and it was also very good value.

I've recommended it a few times on this board, including in my trip report - here are a couple of threads:
