Where to stay and how much time in wine country?!
 

Hi!

We have 5 nights in Cape Town and would like to spend two (out of the 5) in the wine country. We arrive in Cape Town in the evening so we'll really only have two full days in the city itself.
Is this "enough" time, or should we only spend one night in the wine country?
Also, between Le Quartier Francais and La Couronne, where is the best place to stay in the wine country?

We stayed at Le Quarier Francais a few years ago - we loved it! Beautiful setting, lovely room and amenities, and fabuous service.

Be sure to make lunch reservations at La Petite Ferme - only open for lunch. It was a hightlight of our trip to the wine country!

We only stayed two nights at Lanzerac Manor and it was too brief! It's a beautiful area with lots of wineries to visit, great restaurants and charming towns. We could easily have stayed two more nights.

Le Quartier Francais and La Couronne are both in Franschhoek, but Le Quartier is right in town on the main street so you could walk to all the shops and restaurants. We stayed at Stellenbosch but went to Franschhoek for the day, but Le Quartier was closed when we were there. We went for lunch at La Couronne, it is a mile or two out of town, in a beautiful setting on a hillside. We had an excellent lunch there with a wonderful view. We did not see any of the rooms.
So it kind of depends if you want to be right in the little town of Franschhoek or in a private setting out of town.
We loved the wine region area, so you can easily spend two nights there between Franschhoek, Stellenbosch, all the shops, wineries, restaurants,etc.

You MUST stay at La Petite Ferme. Absolutely breathtaking views of the valley from your porch. HIGHLY recommend it.

We stayed 6 nights in Cape Town and three in Franschhoek. Our main choices for the wine country stay were between Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and a few accommodation options that were not in either town but out in the country nearby.

Stellenbosch is a town with more locals using the amenities - restaurants, shops etc - but on the down side is a student town and I wouldn't want to be there on a Friday or Saturday evening. Just my preference. Franschhoek has many more amenities aimed at visitors - more expensive restaurants, art galleries etc. - but we didn't feel it suffered from this or felt artificial in any way. We appreciated the small size of the town and being able to walk to many restaurants from our hotel.

You'll likely be happy with either choice - I've not come across people who stayed in either town regretting their choice.

I would agree that the view from our porch at La Petite Ferme was outstanding and very relaxing. Also the staff could not have been more helpful. Had dinners at both Le Quartier Francais and Haute Cabriere Cellar, and greatly enjoyed them.
