What type of rental vehicle for Kruger?

We will be in Kruger & Sabi Sands for 9 days in late November for game viewing & hopefully some good photography. Agent quoted us a price for a VW Polo which was very reasonable. Sweetie wants a taller vehicle because he is worried that in a shorter one we might not be able to spot game as well. But the Renault Scenic is about $50 more per day ($450 for the 9 days). This seems like a lot to me and doesn't sound worth it -- but what do you experienced Fodorites say? Is it really necessary? Do you have trouble seeing game if you're in a regular car?

You pose two questions. From a driving prespective: In Kruger you will travel on paved roads so you only need an ordinary car. Sabi Sands covers a lot of area that is not paved and you may be driving on "washboard " gravel type roads most of the time. An ordinary car can handle it, but at a very slow pace. The time of year makes a diference. Normally the roads are only graded once a year after the rainy period.

From a size of vehicle prespective, in Kruger you'll need to get on the roof of the vehicle to see over the parked cars whenever you find lions asleep near a waterhole. I suppose if there was a small toyota next to the road and you were in an SUV then you cold see over the toyota.

In summary, if you were only going to Kruger, any vehicle will do. If you are going to drive the gravel roads in the Sabi Sands area, I personally would prefer a big SUV so I wouldn't cringe listening to all of the stones hitting the undercarriage of a small car.

Hi Lisa,

I was invited to SA by one of the locals who was kind enough to make ALL arrangements for me. After we went to the luxury lodges, we then ventured into Kruger Nat'l Park-they "only" considered a van(looked like a minibus) so that we could be "high" up. They ruled out a car!
