What to see in Casablanca?
Hi,
I am trying to figure out how much time to spend in Casablanca. Looks like Hassan Mosque is a must-see but unfortunately guided tours are Sat-Thu 9 am, 10 am, 11 am and 2 pm and our flight gets there around 3:00. We have to spend the night there. Is Habous worth a visit? What about Medina in Casablanca? A walk through the city? Place Muhammed V, palaise de justice, etc. Any part of the city that is worth our time to walk around or getting on a cab to drive around? Thanks. |
Lonely Planet has a walking tour of down-town Casa that's worthwhile if you're going to be there anyway. If I'd been there longer I'd have tried to visit the Jewish Museum. The mosque is very new and I didn't think it was that exciting - aside from being about the only one in Morocco that allows non-Muslims inside. For links to my TR and photos see my reply on Rabat.
Why do you have to spend the night in Casa? I would (and did) take the train from the airport to Rabat. |
Thanks for all the help.
Interesting that you mention the 45 minutes walk of the Lonely Planet. I was debating wether we should do that or get a Taxi and drive around the city. We get there Sat and leave on Sunday. The 45 minute walk is through the city and I thught it will be quiet on a weekend. Is it still worth it in your opinion? What about Medina? Looks like is nothing special in Casa? I looked at the pictures last night from your trip for Casa and Rabat and read some of your report. Very nice pictures. Where is the market in Casablanca (fish, etc) that you have in the pictures? We are interested to see the mosque and also get a feel of the city. We are flying in and out and might as well see the place. I thought the mosque pictures were interesting. Looked like the mezquito (sp?) in Cordoba, Spain some although much newer. |
Glad you liked the pictures!
If you'll be in Casa anyway I'd do the walk rather than a taxi - easier to take pictures. You do the walk for the buildings, not the street life, which should be on show in the Place Mohammad V anyway. I didn't make it the corniche, but that should be lively on a Saturday night, I would think. I think the market pictures are from the "central market" marked on the walking tour, although I don't remember it being very big - but I was there in the afternoon. I didn't do the medina as I had limited time and figured I would be seeing better ones elsewhere. Casa is a very new city. |
I lived in Morocco two years. Casablanca just isn't very interesting nor indicative of the rest of Morocco. I'd avoid spending any more time there than is absolutely necessary.
When is your trip? |
We will be in Casablanca Feb 27th a Sunday. There are excursions from the ship but would appreciate any info on local guides and where to go if as you say Casa isn't that interesting. Thanks for any help. We'll also be in Agadir on Mon the 28th. and have found a company call Erlebenis that has had some good reviews on cruise critic. But any help with that would be great too.

the hassan mosque is beautiful and worth a visit.
but as a city, casablanca is unfortunately not as exotic or exciting as it may sound. |
I'd take the train to Rabat. Guide unnecessary, get a guidebook.
