What's the best time of year for a safari?

Considering a trip to Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and South Africa), but did not know the best time to go on safari? I've heard that there is a migration that happens in July - is that true and if so, when and for how long. We have most of the month of August this year, but did not know if this is the best time to see the animals and/or if it would be too hot!

There is lots of information posted here about "best times", but East Africa (Kenya & Tanzania) are different than South Africa.

A good guidebook will give you "best times" for different countries and you should consult one.

As to Migration in Kenya, August and September are good, but alot also depends on the animals. They move when they are ready. It can be as early as July or into September - varies. See posts by LizFrazer on this site for report of her recent trip to Kenya. And do a search on "migration" for input from others (sorry, don't recall all who were there) for their reports and comments.

Heat is relative - Kenya in on the Equator with Nairobi and other parts at high altitude, so the temps are relatively constant year-round, except for the rainy or short rain seasons (not in July, Aug or Sept). Usually mid-70s, maybe low 80s, with cool evenings. Again, a guidebook will provide avg. temps for you.

Even if not Migration time, there are plenty of animals to see in both Kenya and Tanzania during this period with various areas North and West and East to visit.

South Africa, on the other hand, is in the Southern Hemisphere and it is their winter, though different areas in SA have different weather. Safari experiences here are different than East Africa as you don't have the wide open plains as in the Maasa Mara (Kenya) or Serengeti (Tanzania), and each area offers diverse experiences.

One (EA or SA) is not better than the other - just different.

Check for other information on this board for clarification of the differences and comments from travelers to all of these countries.
