We will be traveling to Tanzania..our 40th anniv..HELP 1st time to Africa

We have enough miles to travel to Cairo or any city in Europe. Which would be the most reasonalble and what airlines to fly into Kilamjaro. We are going to spend 5-7 days volunteering with the IEFT,education foundation of Tanzania. We would then like to spend 3 days in a terrific safari camp. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you

Patti and George

Patti and George

in order to recommend a safari camp, please give us the dates.
Generally if you fly over there Serengeti should be great e.g. a mobile camp

JRO - i know KLM and Ethiopean are flying into JRO. some Fodorites have the complete list... i've seen somewhwere that "condor" will be flying to JRO fron Nov 09 - is it true??

You don't say from where you're starting - States, Canada, Europe - but know that KLM flies from AMSterdam into JRO. Ethiopian also, but via Addis Ababa; if departing from the States, believe they have a flight out of IAD (Dulles outside of Wash DC) or from somewhere in Europe... maybe Rome.

Use a site as Kayak www.kayak.com to search for flights from your home location.

If stopping in Cairo, Egypt Air (and maybe Kenyan Air) flies into Nairobi/NBO Kenya. Arriving NBO you can take a short 50/min flight to JRO or Shuttle Bus (5/hrs) to Arusha, Tanzania.

Re Condor, believe that is a Lufthansa charter operation, so you'd probably have to get to Frankfurt or other German departure point.

Use the Kayak site to search your options.

Wow, I have been slow to respond!!

We will be going to Tanzania Sept 13-Oct 3.

I have been working on our arrangements and feel I have it pretty much in order other than our safari. We have dates available for this Sept 18-24. We don't need 5star accomadations but we don't want overly primitive either.ANY SUGGESTIONS...we are on a budget!

We arrive in Dar Es Salaam on September 13. We will be staying at the Retreat for 2 nights and they will pick us up from the airport. On the 15th we fly to Arusha on Precision Air. We are staying at the Songota Falls Lodge. We are hoping to volunteer for a few days at a secondary school outside of Arusha(we will see?)THEN we are available for our safari...On the 25th we are going to Mt Kilimanjaro,we will do day hikes in the area, staying at Miragu Hotel.Set 27th we are flying to Zanzibar and stay one night at the Zenji Hotel and 2 nights at the Coffee House. Sept 30-Oct 2 we are going to the other side of the island and staying at the Robinson House. The evening of Oct 2 back to The Retreat and then on the 3rd our long flight back to Seattle, Washington...37hours of travel time...we are using miles!

So what suggestions...we are still working on whether we are going to get a yellow fever shot(we are both in our 60's???)How much cash or traveler's checks to bring and the big one...SAFARI!!
