We enjoy traveling with our 3 year old son!

Traveling in South Africa with a small child will pose little difficulty, particularly if your son has already done some traveling. There are just a couple of issues to consider: Many of the chichi guest lodges and private game reserves in Mpumalanga Province do not accept small children, so be sure to make your situation clear when you book. However, you can enjoy a tremendous game-viewing experience without ever going near a private lodge. Consider visiting Kruger National Park, which you can explore on your own in a rental car. The accommodation in Kruger is comfortable and cheap, and many of the guest units have kitchenettes where you can prepare your own food. Kruger National Park is certainly one of the most popular destinations for South African families. Malaria is a concern, however, and you and your son must take prophylactics--consult your doctor before you go. Otherwise, South Africa is an ideal destination for a family vacation, with excellent infrastructure, no major health risks (other than malaria), and safe food and water supplies. Have a great time.
