Walking Tour Guides in Jerusalem

We are going to Israel in April and would like to find a good walking tour guide preferably a small group tour of the Old City.

Has anyone had some good experiences to share and recommendations?

Or should we just do our own?

Just inside Jaffa Gate, first street on the right opposite the citadel are a bunch of tour offices which offer walking tours.

We just stopped in one of them and ended up with an absolute fascinating guide (ex Hebrew University history professor) and enjoyed one of the best walking tours of our life!

I am guessing that you could check out each such little shop and ask about the "next" guide going out. But regardless, I would assume that competition would guarantee high quality.

We went on one of the Sandeman's "New Jerusalem" walking tours (of Old Jerusalem--"new" is just part of the company's name brand). The company offers free introductory walking tours, three hours, of many cities in Europe. The deal is that you do that one for free, but they offer a bunch of specific tours, like the Mt Olives Tour, for a fee and they want you to get hooked on them. Tips are appreciated but there isn't a lot of pressure. Anyway, we've done the tour with their company in both Jerusalem and Prague and both time they did a really excellent job. We learned SO much! I would definitely recommend the company to anyone traveling to Jerusalem. They meet twice a day at 11 and 2:30 at Jaffa Gate. We did the free Zion Tours walking tour of the Old City. Excellent, knowledgeable, entertaining, educated tour guide. The tour guides depend only on tips. We liked the tour so much that we also did their Mt. of Olives tour a few days later. This one costs money, although it is quite reasonable--about $15 per person. Again, we learned a lot and were glad we didn't do that one on our own. The tours meet outside the Jaffa Gate. Check them out online. Only caveat is that the free tour attracts quite a crowd, so if you're looking for an intimate group, this is not for you.

hey tek, zion tours doesn't offer a free tour, and they don't meet outside jaffa gate.

the tours you're talking about are the same sandemans tours katrinab is talking about, the tours that meet at 11 & 2:30 at jaffa gate!
