Walking the Sahara dunes
 

I will leaving for Morocco in 3 weeks and have read all the posts here on the country.
Everything has been so helpful. Many fodorites have talked about walking on the dunes in the desert. I plan to do this as well.

Here's the question - what kind of shoes are required to do this? I am bringing sandals (with and without straps) but wasn't planning on any type of sneaker or hiking boots in order to keep my luggage as light as possible. Some people have even walked barefoot! If we walk in the early morning, the sand might not be too hot.

What do you think - can I get away with the sandals or not?

I went in barefeet (mind you I went in February so the sand wasn't hot), better than having to empty your shoes all of the time - I guess it depends on how long you will be walking for, if its very long you may want closed in shoes.

Sweaty feet and sand - doesn't match very well and you might experience blisters.

Maybe get good walking boots and socks - or barefoot if it's doable.

We only walked in the early evening so I can't speak about hot sand but I definitely found it most comfortable to walk barefoot. Started out in running shoes and that was difficult because they filled up with sand immediately. I would think sandals would be difficult, too - constantly needing to empty them.

in the desert it's possible to walk barefoot in the evening, it's more comfortable and also free massage,with the sandals it's a little dificult.

How did you find the weather - especially nights in the desert?
Our trip includes 2 nights in tents - just wondering if we'll freeze!
And did you get much rain elsewhere?

if it's for mid-feb it will be a bit warm, and better than January, because during December-January, you will not be able to walk on the sand when it touch your feet, because it will be freezing, so for Feb, i think you might walk on it just by Sandals. and try to relax first night the hotel and second day you can do the camel ride experience, this is my opinion about it.

I found the weather quite pleasant in the daytime. A bit cooler in the evenings, especially if it was windy. I had a sleeping bag and an extra blanket at night and it was fine (mind you I am from Alberta so am used to the cold). You might need a fleece for the evenings.
