Visiting Johannesburg

Are there any resorts or places to get away that are a few hours drive from Jo'Burg? We are visiting family for a few days there and don't particularly enjoy Jo'Burg and wanted to take the family elsewhere for a couple days, but didn't know if there was anything close. And, I know this sounds silly, but my family won't have any idea about what's around there.

Try north, lapalala wilderness.
Might be a bit too far.
Mount Grace for a countryside setting.

Madikwe reserve is around 4 - 5 hours from Joburg. No casinos, but a lot of rhinos.

Maropeng and the Cradle of Humankind. Good for family, too. Some nice places to stay in the area.

Have to agree with your husband about Sun City.

As others have mentioned, there are some nice country hotels to the north of the city (near the Cradle of Humankind). You could also visit the DeWildt endangered wildlife breeding centre.

If you're willing to consider flying (there are very inexpensive flights in SA) you could go to Cape Town, the Kruger area, or Port Elizabeth (for Addo and the Eastern Cape Reserves or the Garden Route) more quickly than you could drive to Madikwe.

See my friend Rudi's long post on this other travel board: (With apologies, if necessary, to Fodor's.)

He's only got around to making half of the suggestions "live" links, but I think it should nevertheless give you a lot of "food for thought".

Hmmmm many people to many commercial casinos...

There is a gorgeous place called Jembisa which is 2 hours from Johanensburg where you take over the whole house and they feed you, do game drives and it is just so gorgeous!!

Another alternative if this is to expensive is Entabeni which is also in the waterberg and not as expensive.

If you really want to treat yourself than go to Ants nest/Ants Hill it is so wonderful adn your kids will not be seen all day as they are busy, it is such a wonderful family getaway!!

If you need more ideas that are less costly let us know I am sure we can think of more!

Thanks for all of your help. It looks like Magaliesburg might work out. Found some lovely places that aren't too expensive. I think getting a self-catering place would be good for us so we can visit and have a good braai!
