Visa Question

Hello Everyone,
My friends and I are going on safari to Kenya and Tanzania. We would like to get our Kenyan visa in advance but are confused. Do we need a single entry visa ($50) or a multiple entry visa ($100)? Also what about a transit visa ($20)? We called the embassy but have received different answers. Thanks in advance
Aaron

For Kenya you require a Single entry visa @ $50 which will allow you to cross between Kenya and Tanzania within 6/months.

For Tanzania, the current cost is also $50 for the visa which allows crossing between the two countries within 3/months.

The Kenyan Transit Visa at $20 is good for very short stay in Kenya; then you have to move on. Once in Tanzania, you will not be permitted to return to Kenya unless you purchase another visa, that is, unless you're only arriving at and staying in the airport for boarding your homebound flight.

Depending on your itinerary... where arriving, for how long, where going from first point of entry, for how long, and departing from where... will be the determining factor.

Remember, if obtaining visas in advance, you have to provide passport photos with each. Send application & photos w/ money order to Kenya Embassy, wait for its return. Then do the same for the Tanzania Embassy, wait for its return. Since you are mailing your passport, it is highly recommended you mail by FedEx, along with a pre-paid FedEx return envelope for each.

It can take from a few days to a few weeks for your passports to be returned with the respective visas.

A search on this board will bring up various threads on this subject.

Sandi, have you heard anything about the East African visa that is supposed to be available in November? It would cover Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

ShayTay -

When November comes, we'll know. It's been under discussion for a while, but until it's put into effect, we're stuck with the old rules. Passing this new visa proposal is one thing, putting it into effect at the various embassies for those who choose to obtain visas prior departure and then in each country may take a bit more time.

Getting the changes going on in the States and and UK (probably elsewhere) today, with the "carrying liquids" was done in 4-hours. What I'd call a miracle, since it would normally take weeks.

We'll just have to wait and see, if and when.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! I'm flying in and out of Nairobi for a Tanzania trip (frequent flier ticket.)
