Visa for Jordan, while on a cruise?

I know this isn't the cruise forum (duh) and I have posted on cruise critic and haven't received an answer, so as usual, I'm attempting to get a definitive answer on this forum! I will be on a cruise that docks in Aqaba and would like to visit Petra. I do not want a shore excursion or private tour. Just want to hire a taxi and ride out, and do my own research. I can not find out, (even from the cruise company) if I need to apply for a visa for a few hours visiting Petra, or if the ship will cover me with a temporary visa. I'm pretty sure I'm safe if I do a tour of some kind, but do I have to, if I want to leave the ship on my own? Thank you in advance.

It is very easy to find this info. The first site that popped up via a cursory google search . . . Aqaba Visa for cruise ship passengers
