visa charge

Why has Turkey raised its visa fee to $100 dollars? They are going to kill their tourism industry.

Turkish visa fees correspond to how much Turkish nationals have to pay to get visas from that country. The increase to $100 affects US citizens only, since the US recently increased its tourist visa fee to $100.

I doubt if it'll have a huge impact on tourism in Turkey. Turkey gets a lot more tourists from Europe, Russia & Israel than from the US and the overwhelming majority of Americans contemplating visiting Turkey will not decide to cancel a trip on what is basically an extra charge of $50.

Agree with davidh- The $100USD TK visa fee for Americans is due to the US State Departments rapidly hiking up in 2002 the fee for TK citizens visiting the US.

If this bothers you, you might also need to consider that the tourist admission fees to Tokapi and a few other tourist "must-sees" in Sultanhmnet are expensive even by US standards. (llike $35USD/person for all 3 areas in Topkapi).

On the other hand....admissions fees at the archeological sites at Ephesus, Myra, Aspendos, are also steep- but other than this, Turkey is a true bargain. Particularly for Americans.

We returned 2 weeks ago after 3 months in TK. Turkey is an undiscovered bargain for Americans, when food and lodging costs are factored in. AND- you'd be hard-pressed to find a more welcoming country if you are the nervous type. The Turkish people are some of the kindest and helpful folks on the planet. And they seem to be peculiarly found of Americans, regardless of impressions you may gather from the recent US news.

Lastly, if time permits- I would strongly recommend getting your visa in the US, BEFORE arriving at the IST airport. It just saves SOOOOOO much time on arrival, honest!
