visa

on several trips i have gotten visas from home with all the hassles and expense involved only to see people at the airports from the u.s.a. get there visa on the spot in minutes . with valid u.s. passports are we risking being refused entry by not getting the visa from home.

That depends on the country. Be more specific.

Kenya will issue a visa upon arrival for $50.

And if Tanzania, also $50 USD upon arrival at Kilimanjaro or at border crossing at Kamanga (crossing from Kenya to Tanzania).

It's also a good idea to have extra passport size photos when you travel. You never know when a particular country might ask for one (though they do have your passport - it's just a precaution).

gail - they ask for USD as itis till the "currency of the world" - seems everyone loves those "greenbacks"
