Villages around Nairobi

One more question for the experienced safari travelers. I asked our guide about going to local villages on our safari. From the email they sent to me it sounds like they discourage it. I asked specifically about villages at the Masi Mara. Has anyone had experiences visiting villages around Nairobi or at the Masi Mara?

I am an experienced world traveler so if the guide was worried about local people haggeling me to purchase products I am not concerned about that.

If there are any villages someone could recommend I would appreciate the advice. Also, is there a charge to visit the villages? Is it customary to pay for photos of people in the villages? Is it safe to go to the local villages?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

No experience near Nairobi. Visit to village in the Mara was pretty good. Enjoyed even more visit to village just outside north gate of Samburu Nat'l Reserve. Charge both places was $20 per person. no extra charge for photos.
