Beat the heat in Egypt?
Leaving next week...
Yes, we are mentally prepared for the heat, but we'd love some tips. Besides getting up early to make the most of the cooler morning hours, how can we keep from baking in Egypt? There are 6 of us (4 kids 9 - 17) and we will be basically everywhere from Cairo to Abu Simbel and the White Desert to Ras Galum. Any strategies? Any ideas for hotel swimming pools we can use (fee or free) in Aswan & Luxor? Thanks!

Other than the obvious - hats, lots of water, loose clothing - but you know all that. We had to really encourage our daughter (age 11 at the time) to drink enough water - since some of the bathrooms are rather gross, she did not want to use them. So keep that in mind for the kids.

If you are from a more humid climate, Egypt may not feel too hot to you. That can be dangerous because you don't realize how hot you are getting or how much water you are losing sweating. Make sure to keep yourself waterloaded, drink more bottled water than you think you could possibly need. Wear hats and loose long clothes.
By the way, I'm posting from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and the unofficial temperature Thursday afternoon at 1400 was 129F/54C. Hopefully you won't have to put up with anything quite that ridiculous!

How about those scarf things that have a gel in them-you wet it, tie it around your neck and they help. I got some for my husband (for golf) a couple of years ago and he loves them. Got those off QVC but maybe sporting goods stores carry them.

Thanks, all - I bought some combination plant misters/hand-held fans yesterday and they're brilliant!
