victoria falls
travelling to victoria falls from cape town. any thoughts on where to stay? will probably be there for 3 days. is that time sufficient?

Read the other thread about Vic Falls area hotels.

if you are staying on the Zim side, I'd choose the Ilala Lodge. Some prefer the Vic Falls Hotel but it was too "stuffy" for me.

3 days (or do you mean 3 nights?) is enough. Few people share my preference, but on the Zim side I'd rather be out of town, so I've stayed most often at the A'Zambezi. I've also stayed at the old Sun (now gone), its replacement the Kingdom, and Ilala...all different but OK. Who cares, if the beds are comfortable, the food good and the beer cold? The A'Zambezi is comfortable enough, is right on the river bank so cruises depart from the hotel's gardens, the outdoor eateries and bars have a more natural setting, and it has regular shuttle buses into town (only 4 ks away). It's also very close to the Zambezi NP entrance, so wildlife visitors are a bit more common than elsewhere. I like the ambience there.

Depends on what you want to see. Personally I would stay at a lodge in the area and take one of their shuttles in to see the Falls. We stayed in Vic Falls for two nights and then at Matetsi for four nights. We could have skipped the Vic Falls stay as each day after morning game drives there was a shuttle in to Vic Falls returning in time for the afternoon game drive. We had great game sightings at the lodge including a pack of wild dogs. However if you only want the Falls and activities centered on it (bungy-jumping, helicopter flights, ultralight flights, etc.) then stay in Vic Falls and three days will be fine.

depends entirely on the time of year.
All year round zim side is fine. Jan - Sept you would be Ok on the Zam side. Plenty of options both sides, budget & taset will dictate, which property you end up sleeping at. |
If money is no object stay at the Royal Livingstone, absolute luxury. The Zambezi Sun is also a good quality hotel on the same site as the RL. Take the helicopter trip over the falls - fantastic. We were there in April/May last year when the falls were in full flow. What a sight. In my opinion 3 days is ample but it depends on how adventuous you are, I guess. Have fun.
