Victoria Falls 3 day visit from a month in SA
 

First visit to Victoria Falls for us, fifth to South Africa. DH would like to drive but we have now found excursions from Joburg combining flights and hotel to be reasonable, and this appeals to me.
Am wondering has anyone stayed recently in Victoria Falls township? I like the idea of walking from hotel to Falls when one wishes.

Is there any further information on the combined Zimbabwe-Zambia visa please?

We have booked April and May, one month altogether, and now have to plan our itinerary. We are in our seventies, but reasonably active, I quite like the idea of revisiting places we have previously enjoyed, Pilanesberg, Kruger, and particularly St Lucia, maybe staying in Swaziland a few days this time.. Have read about Chobe, but it seems bit complicated and expensive to get to.

So great to hear that you are active and excited! Travel is great!

To the best of my knowledge, the KAZA UniVisa is still not available. Suspended until further notice. This means that the combo VISA for both Zim and Zam is not available. You can purchase individual visas upon arrival.

There are a number of places within walking distance of the falls depending upon budget and style of travel. There are also shuttles if you are slightly beyond walking.

Chobe may make for a nice day trip for you. Some water game viewing could be something different for you! It can be crowded though. There are many options for arranging that.

Truthfully, it's quite open ended what you can do so if you have more specifics about what you're interested in, I'm sure lots will chime in!

On this trip, we intend to revisit Kruger and St Lucia, so maybe not Chobe as well. Just researched Madikwe, but the sky high prices of private lodges put us off. After all, $600 pppn, is probably 10 days travel somewhere else! May include Capetown if Vic Falls doesn't work out.

Didn't say we are old Aussies and we don't celebrate 4th July down under. Today, we had a federal election, so are waiting to see if we have a different government. May know by 4th. Hope you have a good celebration that day. Best wishes

Lost an earlier reply, trying to get some recent links for you - but I'll try to recreate it again!

We stayed at Ilala Lodge in Vic Falls (Zimbabwe) in 2012. http://www.ilalalodge.com/ It was lovely, not so big you felt lost among large tour groups, but personal and comfortable and walking distance to the Falls and "town." Two nights in Vic Falls is plenty. We had a special visit with Charles Brightman, the head of the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit, which turned out to be a highlight of our entire trip. If you click on my name and go to my profile, you can see that trip report and the Vic Falls portion is pretty much the first place I "report" on!

Just this past May we went back to SA (our 3rd, so you will be 2 up on us) to see Kruger, and the coast and drove through Zimbabwe to get to Hluhluwe-iMfolozi.

femmefatale, you might want to try http://Wild-Wings-safaris.com for a side trip to Vic Falls. They did our trip this year. http://www.zambezi.co.uk is another option They helped plan our 2012 trip.

You have to pay admission to get to the Falls, but you do not need to do it with a tour guide (we didn't). Go as soon as they open in the morning, although it probably won't be as hot for you in April/May as it was when we were there. You really do want to stay in Zimbabwe, as that is the best viewing side.

Sorry for the late reply. DH researched on the net to find packages, and found one with a special. Flight Centre here in Australia matches prices. We haven't got the tickets yet, but I think it was with Ilala lodge, and British Airways cheap carrier.
