VAT Certificate

Does anybody know what this means and what I have to do to get one? I've seen it referenced before in relationship to having camera equipment. Does the average tourist need this?

I didnt get your question. But, if you travel to SA.....then you can claim a VAT refund for your purchases. It's only worth it, if you purchase expensive curios/artifacts etc etc., as the lines are really long. If you opt to do this, you have to show your items to an inspector just prior to checking in your bags for your flight.

We did as Hari mentioned above back in 2002 (ie got the refund). To avoid lines we got the Cert stamped and 'added up' in Capetown before we got to the airport (as far as I can remember there are places that will do this scattered around SA - they charge a % of the amount to be refunded to do this). Then we just went to the desk at the airport before we checked in. We showed them a couple of items on our list and hey presto got our refund - all done within 5 mins.

Is it only is South Africa? Does it apply to Kenya, as well?

I still don't quite understand your question. VAT is value added tax and is included in the price of goods and services you buy in Kenya. I've never heard of anyone claiming it back on departure from Kenya and don't know if it's possible.

You can also claim back the VAT tax in Namibia on items being taken out of the country. It is basically the same system as South Africa--in addition to the receipts, the items have to be shown at the VAT tax window.
