Undesirable souvenir

A month ago we bought a souvenir in St. Lucia - a carved wooden warthog that was black. The seller put it in a plastic bag and I didnt open it until we got home last week. The 'black' turned out to be diesel oil, it is still getting on our hands despite a week in the Florida sun. So if you like the carvings, buy them au naturel.

You might want to try citrus based bilge cleaner. I know it sounds odd, but I used it to clean the legs of some wooden chairs that sat for a bit in motor oil. I'm sorry I don't remember the brand. I was working on a boat up in Alaska and there was some around and I thought it was worth a try - and it worked.

Sometimes the rotten souvenirs I have bought make me remember the trip fondly while I laugh at myself. We bought an "alabaster" vase in Egypt that when I put water and flowers in it started to dissolve since it was actually paper mache. I still keep it on my mantle and smile whenever I think of the guy who sold it to me.
