Turkey with OAT
Am going to Turkey in September with OAT, which is Overseas Adventure Travel. I would
appreciate any tips as to this trip--for
example, what did you take to your host/
homestay friends? Did you visit a school?
I went to Thailand in February with OAT, and we visited a school--no maps at all. Any tips on what to take for the children and
or teachers? Well, you know ideas, comments
and suggestions are always welcome. I am
looking forward to the experience!

We lived in Turkey several years; my suggestion is you give flowers, wine, candy or sweets from the local bakery, all purchased after you get there. Turkey has a modern economy...they can buy anything there they need, if they have the money. I would not labor under the assumption that they are all craving something from America. When you give a gift to someone upon visiting their home, the normal Turkish drill is that they set it aside and open it after you leave. So if they don't open it, don't say "oh, open it now..."
