Tsavo West NP, Kilaguni Lodge vs Severin

We have the delightful opportunity to stay 3 or 4 nights in Tsavo West, NP, Kenya this comning May and are considering the two mentioned establishments. Welcome thoughts from fellow travelers who have been at either one during similar time period. The comfort features of either place look great but what about the local game presense for "down time" viewing? Thoughts from birders would be an added bonus! Or, any suggested alternative camps/lodges?

As well as my response to this query on another forum, I'd suggest you might look at the much cheaper Kitani Safari Lodge, a self-catering place right next to Severin and run by them.

Have a good trip, whichever you choose!

Dick, I haven't stayed at either but isn't Severin much smaller than Kilaguni? On the other hand, I think there is a waterhole at Kilaguni. I was at Finch Hatton's in June a couple of years ago and can recommend it, though it may be more expensive. Tents are right above the water, so many hippos, crocs and birds day and night.

I'll be in Tsavo East in early June--looking forward to reading about your trip!

Thanks Richard and Leely. It would seem the wife is strongly leaning towards Severin, so my task is completed.

Yes, Finch Hatton looked very inviting but given trip we are contemplating, would over whelm the budget.

Severin looks very nice, not too big. Enjoy your trip.

I was at the Severin Safari Camp in November,2011 and I did enjoy the stay. The luxury tents are spacious and their KENBALI health center is very nice. The self catering Kitani is a cheaper version and managed by the same. That night eight lions passed very early in the morning and we also had a clear view of mt.kilimanjaro.I booked with a local tour operator-uniglobe Speedbird safaris or you can book directly with the severin group.
Kilaguni is not as wild (feel of being in the wild) as severin.
