Troubles?
 

I will be in Tanzania and Kenya Dec. 1st for two weeks. Have recieved a second letter warning about troubles in the area.. What's happening? Need I be concerned?

The US State dept recently issued a new warning about travel in East Africa, but IMO, it's really a renwal of the old warning that's been in effect for some years now. The only new info I noticed is about the pirate activity at sea. You can check it out at:

hi, even last nt (fri) going out into another city not even a 20min ride from my own city. i found my self locking my car doors. just go and don't sweat it.
these warnings are a real pain.

From whom did you receive a "letter?"

As wjsonl mentions, it looks like "same ole, same ole" except for the added maritime warning. The US government has been reissuing the same warning for the past three years.

For travel anywhere these days one has to be vigilant.

We all want to know who has been sending you letters about travel warnings. Travel agents sometimes have you sign a form stating that you are aware of a State Dept travel warning. Is that it?

With the Kenyan consititutional election just held, there was a 10/25 State Dept warning on potential trouble surrounding that situation. The election was held Nov. 21, I think, so the event has passed, but the warning regarding election caution expires near the end of December.

Don't be surprised if you see a new warning on the State Dept site in a few days. The 3-year old warning referred to here was updated again in July 2005, set to expire the end of November 2005. Seeing as how we are very near the end of November, I would imagine it will be renewed. But that doesn't mean there is a whole new threat.

All sorts of very conservative, risk averse tour companies are and have been taking groups and sending individuals to Kenya. The Kenyan tourism business is experiencing huge growth. So you may need to be concerned about running into too many other tourists! Hope you are able to avoid that pitfall.

Another safari is the only thing that could fix the troubles.

The terrorism warnings could refer to any country in the world and the piracy is a trouble if you’re going on a cruise along the Somali coast. The orange (no) vote in the referendum and the president sacking all ministers might be good for Kenyan democracy or it might bring more trouble. In either case, tourists won’t notice a thing.
