CW,

First real walking safari...3 nights of that. In previous trips, i've only done short walks in and around the camps during break time. I'm also doing 2 nights at Forest lodge. I really am interested in their cheetah conservation program.

Cheers
Hari

Funny, the instant I saw your pictures, I guessed that they were taken with the Rebel. I think the images have a very distinctive look.

I won't be able to go to Namibia until 2008 I'm fulfilling my need for all things Asian right now; Thailand and Burma this year, Cambodia Vietnam and Laos next year.

The world is a big place, the more I travel, the bigger it seems to get...

In the meantime, I'll live vicariously through wonderfully detailed trip reports like yours. I even had dreams about trodding on stink bugs!! Ugh!

How did you make the arrangements?(Sorry, if I've missed previous posts about it).

great report and pics. Chelsea - thanks for sharing.
Glad you clarified bats question on sharing a vehicle as it is a concern of mine as well.
It's good to know that people can be civilized by rotating etc. I still fear that I will get stuck behind large headed, non rotating people who want to safari at break neck speed or worse .

Chelsea2,
Loved your posts, loved your photos!
I didn't go to Mombo but have gone to Singita [Ebony] also.
What we did, was start our trip at 2 great rough and ready type camps
[well to be honest not real rough- but not on the level of the cool Mombo-
and end our trip in the fanastic Singita ] by the time we got to Singita we needed the all-out luxury of that place.
And by the way some of your best pictures were on the Singita leg of your trip- we had some really amazing animal sightings there also! Thanks again for sharing -what a great trip & will try Mombo in the future.

From scenery to animals, your shots were fantastic. The leopard cub feeding was excellent. A lovely collection of memories.

Chelsea

I finally got chance to read this, an excellent trip report. This time next week I will be on the first leg of the long trip to Botswana, where will be at Mombo for six days, followed by four at Vumbura Plains and three at Duma Tau (my travel agent is a hero!)
We loved Mombo for two days last year and the chance to go back for six with a pro photographer and a private guide was too much to pass up, particularly at the price and we cant wait. Last year we saw the Mathata pride which numbers over 20 Lion I think, so its good to hear so many of those cubs have done well. In addition the pack of dogs is up to 5 ( a couple of months ago, they thought they were gone) and the arrival of a Cheetah is also exciting news.

On the issue of communla dining, particularly Boma nights, it is no problom to request private dinners either in your tent or by the pool. With six nights at Mombo and the possibility of 3 Boma nights I will definitely do that, though we will be a group of 8 at that time.

Less than seven days I cant wait.

Thanks to all of you on your kind words on the newbie trip report and photos! The fun part is that writing everything down and looking through all your photos is like getting to relive it again and again!

napamatt - I am so envious that you will be spending six days at Mombo what a special treat. Do you know who your private guide will be? Malinga (also known as Doctor) our guide at Mombo, used to work at Vumbura Plains and he also recommended this a really great camp to visit, even before the six paw renovation. He also said his next choice would be Duma Tau - so it sounds like you are doing his entire hit parade! Sounds like a good idea to pass on a Boma dinner or two. They are such a special experience the first and second time even, but it wears off a little bit after a while. The community dinners were great though because we got to meet so many people who were also really excited about what they were experiencing each day. Can't wait to see your pictures when you return - I hope you have more luck with the leopards, rhinos and wild dogs than we did and just as much luck with the lions, cheetahs, buffalo and elephants!

Chelsea

Our guide is one of Wilderness Safari's specialist guides, Grant Atkinson. He often leads the overland trips. You are right we are very lucky to get to spend six days at Mombo, last year we had one great Leopard sighting and will be keen for more this year, particularly as one of the females had, at least last week, three very young cubs. But given Lion densities and her own poor track record in raising cubs, who knows if any will be around when we get there on the 12th.
I'm also glad the people at Mombo were there for the game experience, some of the people we shared a vehicle with last year, were "OD'ed on animals" on their third day at Mombo!
As for excitement, this will be my 10th trip to Africa, with two booked for next year also. I am excited just to be in the land rover, anything I see is a bonus.

hey matt,
how do you get these up to the minute reports from mombo (the dogs and the leopard cubs)? i am heading their beginning of sept and cant wait to hopefully see some of the same predators i saw last yr. i saw the then 2 wild dog pack, the famous legedima sp?, (im assuming its her mother that has the 3 cubs), burnt ebony and of course all the lions.

big

the reports come from my agent who used to work for Wilderness and so is totally up to speed with everything going on there. In fact they run specialist digital photography safari's and the dog pack was a feature of the trip that just returned.
Yes it is Legidama's mother who has a new set of cubs.
