Travelling To Zanzibar : Need Information

Hello all, im planning this holiday in advance so i could always change my mind but i would like to know where to get the best information on Zanzibar? I have found one website ( http://www.zanzibarholidays.co.uk/ ) that seems to give some good information but i would like to know more. I have had a look at Fodor's website itself and i typed in Zanzibar and it doesnt seem like anyone has posted on it, so i would like to see if anyone has been and has got some tips or advice for me and my family.

Any advice is welcome and i appreciate your time for reading and replying (if you have)

Thanks - Andrew, is anyone needs more information please dont hesitate to respond :)

Hello Andrew,
We recently visited Zanzibar, the weather is wonderful, the water crystal clear and luke warm (well, for me, coming from Cape Town, the water was warm anyhow), the people friendly.

You will find all kinds of accommodation in Zanzibar, we opted for a mix of middle to high-end accommodation, which I found very good value all round.
Off the top of my head, Azanzi Beach Hotel and Matemwe are fabulous, and for a very big and real spoil, Mnemba Island Lodge is just plain sublime.

If you aren't booking one of the higher end accommodations, it is remote'ish Africa, so maybe just be aware that three star Zanzibar is not necessarily three star Zurich, two star Zanzibar is not always spot-on two star Paris, and so on :)

I am a sunset lover, so we mostly stayed on the North-West and West Coast, where I could just see the sun dipping into the ocean.
Sunsets were a deciding factor for me, but, if you aren't me, I'm sure your decision will be based on what kind of holiday you are looking for? ...and what kind of accommodation you prefer (small boutique hotel, bungalow type, larger resort, etc)?
You also don't mention how long you intend staying on the island, but as the island is small, it is very possible to easily split your stay between accommodations if you so wish.
Worth mentioning -
* there are a few busier, touristy areas, I'm not sure how you feel about those (we generally avoid)
* do spend a few nights in Stone Town, we loved the history and culture, the little winding alleys and ancient carpentry are just plain delightful
* book a snorkeling trip, we went with Safari Blue - I wrote an article about our lovely day out here - https://www.southerndestinations.com...h-safari-blue/
* we have been on heaps of spice tours before (Sri Lanka, etc), so we gave this a miss as they are all pretty much the same
* ask for local restaurant recommendations (the small, hidden ones), and try the local curries ... absolutely delicious (and cheap as chips)
* don't expect anything to happen too quickly, it's chilled and relaxed, no one is in any particular rush.

I love Zanzibar so much, I'm considering another little sojourn there next month.

I do hope this helps,
Happy Planning,

If you choose Zanzibar in the 'View by Country' drop down menu you will see lots of threads about Zanzibar.

@Deborah_WH Thanks for the great advice and tips Debbi, i plan to go for around 2 week's with my family but i will also do some "solo" exploration whilst im down there. We would properly get one of the high accommodation hotel's and a big (room or room's) at that as there will be 11 of us. I took a look at the hotel's recommended by yourself and i think Azanzi Beach Hotel is pretty perfect! Also great article on your snorkeling trip, loved ready throw this and would love to book one for me and my younger cousin's. I will definatly stay a few night in Stone town by myself and really enjoy it!

@janisj Thank you for the info, will take a look now and immerse myself in the information that i hope is vast. I didnt know i had to do the View By Country aswell.

Thank you both so much for your replys i really appreciate you both giving me some great advice and information! I cannot wait now and im about to burst with anticipation and excitement! I hope my family has as much of a great time as i think we all would!
