Travelling to Egypt solo (good or bad idea?)
I would like to know people's thoughts and experiences as solo travelers in Egypt. I am in my late 20's and female. I have traveled in Europe by myself and met wonderful people. Not sure if it would be wise to do so in Egypt, even if I plan tours ahead and meet others while I'm there.

I traveled by myself in that I had no campanions, however, for the first half of the time here I had a guide for the daytime or was on a Nile cruise where you couldn't escape people. It was fine. You'll be safe as long as you obey the rules and the Egyptians love to practice their English with Americans and find out what it's really like there.

We went on a tour, and ventured out on our own a little bit. I didn't feel that Egypt was the best country to be traveling around as a single woman.
I'd arrange some tours and guides ahead of time if I were you.

When are you planning on going to Egypt ? The reason I am asking is that I am going with a friend ( we are both female, age 30, single and 50, married ) and another married retired couple in Feb with Gate 1 Travel.. its a 3 day Cairo and a 3 night Nile cruise.. if you are interested, you would have at least some Fodorites to feel safe around!

I had a custom one person tour. I used Wildland Adventures. Type its name in quotes plus travel on Google Y you should find the email. They use a reputable Egyptian Travel Agency -- Emeco. They booked me a Nile Cruise with other non-afiliated English speaking tourists, plus a guide for Cairo, another for Alex and a desert guide for 5 days through the oases in the Western Desert. I was in Sharm without a guide (you don't need one) but they had a rep there who picked me up at the airport & booked me on local excursions. I got great hotel prices through them (the Ritz Carlton in Sharm was $95 per night)
I am happy that I had someone meeting me at the airport and checking me into the hotels. I decided to stay an extra two weeks, but still used Emeco's services for these things.
